OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A northern Michigan man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning.
It happened near Old 27 and West Otsego Lake Road in Bagley Township around 11:11 a.m.
Michigan State Police say four Otsego County sheriff's deputies and one DNR officer went to Chad Williams' home for a mental health petition that was issued by a judge.
They say Williams, 44, refused to come to the door.
While deputies were at the home, a neighbor told them that Williams had threatened him with an axe.
Deputies say they got a search warrant. When they got into the home, they say Williams confronted them, wielding the axe.
They say they asked him to drop the axe, but he refused. They say because of their close proximity, they shot him. The officers were not hurt.
The Otsego County Sheriff has requested Michigan State Police conduct an independent investigation into what happened.
The investigation will be sent to the prosecutor who will decide if the deputies acted within the law.
