The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says pharmaceutical fentanyl is a synthetic, opioid pain reliever, approved for treating severe pain, typically advanced cancer pain. The drug is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is prescribed in the form of transdermal patches or lozenges and can be diverted for misuse and abuse.{ } (WWMT/CDC){p}{/p}

In 2019 alone, 2,698 people were trained to administer the life-saving drug Narcan, and 2,198 kits were distributed. In Barry County, health officials host community overdose prevention training workshops. (WWMT/Alexis Berdine){ }{p}{/p}
